Re-Bounce
This project describes the business model of the hypothetical company Re-bounce, a trampoline restoring and redesigning company. It will discuss the environmental impact of the company and how it will try to have a sustainable, circular economy. Trampolines are made with excellent physical durability but have a short lifespan. There is an established existing second-hand marked in Norway, but a buying a used trampoline might be dangerous if the former owner didn’t take proper care of the trampoline. Along with presenting a system for distribution of used trampolines, the project presents three products made from used trampolines to prolong the lifetime without putting the users at risk.
Re-Bounce
Jumping in a linear economy
Our comfortable way of living today is in many ways a result of the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries. But this improved lifestyle and fast pace growing economy come from the principle of linear economy. Much of the production today is based on the idea of “take, make, and dispose.” Manufactures use virgin materials, make a product with a limited lifetime, before the product is disposed of.
It is both a better economic and ecologic alternative to today’s favoured linear structure. Trampolines absolutely contribute to the problem, with its generous use of un-environmentally friendly materials such as galvanised steel and plastics.
Trampoline Materials
Few things we buy for recreational use consist of as much material as a trampoline. Other than cars, ordinary consumers seldom buy a product that consists of more than 100 kg of galvanised steel. Jumping on trampolines are an ever-increasing recreational activity which brings much-needed physical exercise, but they come with a significant environmental cost. Often trampolines are being bought for children. After some time children may grow out of favour to jump on trampolines and it becomes obsolete, way sooner than the trampolines life expectancy.
ReBounce aim to maximise the use of the high material quality in trampolines. By repeatedly refurbish and maintain the quality of used trampolines, they can multiply their use. After being regularly sold as second-hand trampolines, they will eventually be re-designed as other products which have lower material strength requirements, keeping the material as long in the loop as possible, without compromising with safety.
Trampoline re-sale
A good thing about the Trampoline market in Norway today is the extended use of the second-hand market. At this current time, over 1000 trampolines are being sold or given away on Norway’s most prominent second-hand sight, finn.no.
This indicates a willingness both to sell and buy second-hand trampolines in Norway. The big issue with buying used trampolines is the risk of injury following a faulty trampoline. There is a significant risk of injury associated with the use of trampolines. The National Injury Surveillance system in the U.S estimated that damages resulting from trampoline use cause 100 000 visits to the emergency room in the U.S each year. (Kasmire, Rogers & Sturm, 2016). Not just is injuries following trampoline use prevalent, they can also be very severe. 0.5 % of all injuries from trampolines ends in permanent neurological damage. (Briskin & LaBotz, 2012,)
Refurbished trampolines
It is crucial that trampolines are well taken care of, and their quality monitored. When buying a second-hand trampoline, the consumer has no control over the safety of their trampoline. We know that the average life warrant of trampolines have halved since 1989 from 10 to 5 years mainly because of the short lifespan of the padding and enclosure net, which the trampoline manufacturers are expecting the user to change during the trampolines lifetime. (Briskin & LaBotz, 2012)
ReBounce will be a service that extensively monitors and reestablishes the safety standards of second-hand trampolines giving customers the opportunity to buy second-hand trampolines without compromising the safety of the trampoline users, most often children. Trampolines that no longer are able to be refurbished back to an adequate safety standard will be redesigned to freestanding Hammocks and Sunbeds. ReBounce will operate as both a product manufacturer and service provider in the technical cycle of a circular economy regarding trampoline. ReBounses model is carefully designed to keep the leakage of recourses and energy consumption to a minimum, along with the need for supplementing virgin materials.
Re-Bounce business model
ReBounce’s economic model bases itself on giving owners of trampolines an eco-friendly, easy and economical alternative to disposing of their used trampolines. It offers buyers if new trampolines an eco-friendly, safe and economical alternative to purchasing a trampoline. Old trampolines will be refurbished and sold as second-hand trampolines or redesigned to hammocks and sunbeds.
ReBounce reused trampolines and the need to get rid of used trampolines. A lot of places today you have to pay to be able to recycle trampolines, and you have to disassemble and transport the trampoline yourself. ReBounce relies on peoples wish to want a simpler solution. ReBounce will dismantle the trampoline and take it with them. In exchange, the former owner of the trampoline will also get a gift card from ReBounce with value accordingly to the quality of the trampoline for a replacing hammock or sunbed up to an amount of 100% discount. A high-grade, quality trampoline will need nothing more than a thorough inspection and could be resold for at least 4000 Norwegian kroner according to today’s second-hand market. (“Søkeresultat - Ting fra Torget, ‘trampoline’, Torget | FINN torget”, 2018) Exchanging such a valuable product with an equally costly re-designed product made from ReBounce, along with the noble act of helping the environment, will hopefully be enough for every trampoline-owner to consider ReBounce when disposing of their trampoline.

The ReBounch collection will consist of 4 different products all design with minimal resource consumption as the most important criteria. With every trampoline received, restoring it back to a safe, high-quality trampoline is priority number one. If a trampoline is worn down beyond ReBounce’s strict safety standards, it will be redesigned into one of three different products. All products are carefully designed to be as simple as possible to make using universal trampoline parts.
